A study by Cornell University locates manufacturers among companies customizing off-the-shelf systems when on-boarding AI. With a growing number of manufacturers forecast to boost AI uptake, their struggles to integrate will shape vendor offerings.

A team led by Chris Forman of Cornell’s Dyson management school faculty surveyed a cross-section of European companies about their AI. Manufacturing respondents say they use a hybrid mix, with in-house development teams adapting ready-made tools and platforms.

Findings published in the Journal of Economics and Management Stragegy highlight the impact of sourcing strategy on AI diffusion, with early adopters dictating best-practice. The analysis also examines the effects of buying and building AI systems on labor and innovation.
